LITERACY FOR WOMEN
In 2009 NEF started a Literacy Program for women. These women have had no education or very little and cannot read or write. They attend school in the evening as they work during the day. They are poor and generally low caste women who are eager to learn to read and write and be able to do some arithmetic.
The program runs in six month intervals and the women have the choice to carry on for a longer period if they wish. At the time of writing we have two programs running, a beginner and an intermediate group. The intermediate group are in their second term.
The women are amazing in their enthusiasm and their dedication to their studies. In six months they learn to write and do basic arithmetic. They are so excited to be able learn these skills. We have 50 women at the present time and a long waiting list.
We have many women available for sponsorship. The cost is $10 per month payable for six months ($60). If the woman wishes to continue after six months you have the opportunity to continue to help her. So far all of our women have opted to carry for further study.
You will receive a photo of the Lady you sponsor and a letter from her at the end of the six month period. This is a really worthwhile endeavour and greatly appreciated by the ladies.
Donations to this program are also really appreciated. The money from sponsorships and donations is used for teachers, books, notebooks, pencils etc.
Our blog contains photos of the first graduation in October 2009>>
